EUROPEAN “OPERA” PERFORMED BY TEATRO LIRICO D’EUROPA

The excitement is returning as The Arcada Theatre presents Georges Bizet’s Carmen of 1875, one of the most popular operas in the world!  Teatro Lirico d’Europa is an award winning, internationally touring opera company from Europe that WOWED Arcada audiences the last two years!  They return with a 40 piece orchestra, incredible costumes and the voices of some of the most acclaimed opera stars in the world!  The French opera will also have English subtitles…a true family affair!

“Carmen” is set in southern Spain and tells the story of the downfall of Don José, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the fiery gypsy Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties, yet loses Carmen’s love to the glamorous toreador Escamillo, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. The depictions of proletarian life, immorality, and lawlessness, and the tragic death of the main character on stage, broke new ground in French opera and were highly controversial.
